Wine Awards

We’re excited to share the following accolades received by the wineries along the Wine Road.

If you don’t see your favorite winery, don’t despair. Not all wineries send their wines for review or to competitions, but that doesn’t make their wines any less delicious.

Many of our winery members produce small lots of wine, so their case production is too small to meet the criteria for wine competitions. Plus, most reviewing sources require a wine be either distributed out of state or produced in large enough quantity to be available for purchase for several weeks after the review is published.

We hope this list of scores and awards will encourage you to explore new wines and new wineries on your next visit along the Wine Road.

Wine: 2020 Cabernet

Purchase Here

Date Awarded: 10/3/22

Details: The 2020 vintage is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from grapes grown in Alexander Valley. While waiting for more of our own estate vines plantings to mature, we purchased this Alexander Valley fruit from vineyard owner Sedgwick Dienst in the fall of 2020. Our vineyard crew worked closely with him on two separate dates to choose and harvest the best quality grapes from his young hillside vineyard. We think the resulting wine is a good representation of what a classic Alexander Valley Cabernet is all about - intense fruit, smooth and structured tannins, a lingering finish, and the capacity to age gracefully for many years.

Wine: 2018 Domaine des Chirats Syrah

Date Awarded: 2021

Details: 94 - The 2018 is black as night to the rim of the glass and back. Aromatics of blackberry/black cherry pie filling ooze from the glass, followed by fresh pencil shavings, brioche and savory notes of wild Herbes de Provence, and a hint of cedar. Full-bodied, but not heavy on the palate, the Rockpile minerality carries this wine from the incredibly rich and giving front palate to the exotic mid-palate that showcases black fruits, black licorice, and touch of charcuterie. So rich, so intense, so elegant, and in the end, so magical.

Based on Russian River Valley Pinot Noir from Korbel’s estate vineyards, our Korbel Rouge has the depth of flavor which is a hallmark of fine Pinot Noirs. Purchase Here

Date Awarded: January, 2024

Details: Producer: Leo Steen 93 Drinking Window: 2024 - 2030 Antonio Galloni, January 2024 The NV Fortified Chenin Blanc - SØD Batch 2 is an Angelica-style wine, in this case based on the 2011 vintage. It shows gorgeous complexity. Light brown sugar, dried fruit, cedar and hazelnut open first. This is a bit high-toned, but that slightly volatile character is not uncommon in dessert wines that have been left in barrel, un-topped, and bottled after 12 years in wood.

The use of 100% stems nicely balances the natural richness of the Pommard clone. Crushed flowers, mint, spice and white pepper are all finely sketched. The 2022 is distinctive and a bit clenched, but its balance is very fine.

It is at once quite ripe and racy, yet also nicely lifted by the 100% stems—a natural balance that works well. Kirsch, mint, rose petal and a dose of savoriness from the whole clusters are some of the signatures.

It is also the deepest and most structured of the reds I tasted from Leo Steen. Dark cherry, plum, new leather, licorice, menthol and dried herbs open with some coaxing. This is an especially dark, almost somber wine, but there is plenty of varietal character.

Wine: 2019 Zinfandel, Tori Reserve

Purchase Here

Date Awarded: July 2022 Issue

Details: 2 Puffs & 91 Points | Obvious ripeness is no vice when it is met by as much intense, impressively concentrated fruit as is on display here, and, even if this big-bodied offering shows a bit of back-end heat, its alcohol is well-buffered by loads of juicy, oak-sweetened blackberries that are its abiding theme. Delicate it is not, and it is definitely a wine that needs tagging as one to pair with appropriately full-flavored foods, but it exhibits fine fruity depth and richness to spare, and it is the kind of Zinfandel that is sure to delight fans of expressive, mouthfilling versions that ...

1 Puff - Connoisseur's Guide

Wine: 2019 Zinfandel, Sydney

Purchase Here

Date Awarded: July 2022 Issue

Details: 1 Puff & 90 Points | Optimally ripened blackberry fruit is a constant in this juicy, well-focused Zin, and it is joined by a judicious dollop of sweet and slightly creamy oak. A rich and complete, nicely crafted offering with unwavering varietal authority, it is fairly full in body, but it is also quite carefully balanced with good energy and palatal length. Though it is open and tasty now, it is certain to age effortlessly for another four or five years and is, withal, a very well-made Zinfandel that reflects the virtues to be had from a very good vintage.

Wine: 2019 Zinfandel, 1925/1939 Old Vine, Alexander Valley

Purchase Here

Date Awarded: 1/15/22

Details: Medium dark ruby in color. Aromas of sweet briar predominate, dark fruits with a little creamy toasted oak. Maybe a little rose and Earl Grey tea also. Mouthfilling, almost explosive (in a good way). Dark plums and berries, blueberries and blood orange. Asian spices underlay with interesting herbal characteristics. Not a blockbuster, but restrained in a good way. Substantial yet elegant, finishes long and lip smacking. Drinking well now, but I believe it will age well. Fun stuff, wish I could make it again! Artisan sausages (Caggiano smoked duck for instance), a killer wood fired pepperoni or linguica pizza, or ...

Wine: 2019 Chardonnay, Piper Ranch. Manchester Ridge

Date Awarded: 1/15/22

Details: A remote coastal vineyard on Manchester Ridge overlooking the ocean and the town of Manchester in the distance below. The vineyard itself is on a mesa about 7 miles off of pavement in a wild and scenic spot. Clean air, ocean breezes, ridge heat and Ornbaum-Zeni complex loam soils are the characteristics of this terroir. This wine was made for a gal I used to know who loved Chardonnay. It’s character being floral, lively, expressive and rich, reminding me of her. Aromatics of honeysuckle, white flowers, pineapple and citrus. The palate is lemony, with a slice of lime-kumquat rind character, ...

The vineyard is also considered Deep End in Anderson Valley. 66% clone 2A (Wadenswill) 34% Pommard clone #5. Tasting Notes: Dark ruby with a twinge of purple. Full blown spice on the nose! Dark black fruited with a hint of clove, anise and sandalwood. Really quite pleasant and esoteric, kind of the “Summer of Love” aromatics… Well integrated toasty oak ...

As the winery went up for sale, the grapes had no buyer. Enter Woodenhead…I did due diligence on trying to locate the original planting ownership to no avail.
