Wine Awards

We’re excited to share the following accolades received by the wineries along the Wine Road.

If you don’t see your favorite winery, don’t despair. Not all wineries send their wines for review or to competitions, but that doesn’t make their wines any less delicious.

Many of our winery members produce small lots of wine, so their case production is too small to meet the criteria for wine competitions. Plus, most reviewing sources require a wine be either distributed out of state or produced in large enough quantity to be available for purchase for several weeks after the review is published.

We hope this list of scores and awards will encourage you to explore new wines and new wineries on your next visit along the Wine Road.

Medium dark ruby in color. Aromas of sweet briar predominate, dark fruits with a little creamy toasted oak. Maybe a little rose and Earl Grey tea also. Mouthfilling, almost explosive (in a good way). Dark plums and berries, blueberries and blood orange. Asian spices underlay with interesting herbal characteristics. Not a blockbuster, but restrained in a good way. Substantial yet elegant, finishes long and lip smacking. Drinking well now, but I believe it will age well. Fun stuff, wish I could make it again! Artisan sausages (Caggiano smoked duck for instance), a killer wood fired pepperoni or linguica pizza, or ...

A remote coastal vineyard on Manchester Ridge overlooking the ocean and the town of Manchester in the distance below. The vineyard itself is on a mesa about 7 miles off of pavement in a wild and scenic spot. Clean air, ocean breezes, ridge heat and Ornbaum-Zeni complex loam soils are the characteristics of this terroir. This wine was made for a gal I used to know who loved Chardonnay. It’s character being floral, lively, expressive and rich, reminding me of her. Aromatics of honeysuckle, white flowers, pineapple and citrus. The palate is lemony, with a slice of lime-kumquat rind character, ...

A new wine for us. Planted by Bruce and Moira Conzelman in 2001, but the block I worked with is from 2014, low hillsides. These vines were initially used for their own label, Harmonique wines. The winemaker was Robert Klindt, owner of Claudia Springs winery. The vineyard is also considered Deep End in Anderson Valley. 66% clone 2A (Wadenswill) 34% Pommard clone #5. Tasting Notes: Dark ruby with a twinge of purple. Full blown spice on the nose! Dark black fruited with a hint of clove, anise and sandalwood. Really quite pleasant and esoteric, kind of the “Summer of Love” aromatics… Well integrated toasty oak ...

Planted in 2003 and 2004 by a company called Manchester Ridge LLC, on land leased from the Piper Family, which in the end gave up and was then taken over by the family and managed by Martin Mochizuki. I discovered this wine under the La Follete label and was enamored. Made by some distinguished names over the years including Greg La Follete, Byron Kosuge and Kenneth Juhasz. Isolated on a ridgetop overlooking the Pacific and the town of Manchester on the coast. The vineyard site is approx. 2700’ in elevation on a mesa, about seven miles off pavement. Soil is Ornbaum-Zeni, a mountainous ...

French Colombard is a moderately aromatic white wine with plenty of juicy acidity and pronounced minerality, it’s delicious! We make ours in a dry, crisp style as a single varietal, (which by the way is very rare now on the North Coast), and makes it suitable not only for raw oysters, but for cooked oysters such as Oysters Rockefeller. This one is local as local can be from the floor of the Russian River Valley at Cameron Ranch. We only know of one other vineyard in Sonoma County which produces this varietal. A rare gem that is worthy of ...

The 2022 Great American International Wine Competition awarded this wine a Platinum medal. 2017 was marked by a generous vintage, with incredible Pinot Noirs produced in the Russian River Valley. Colors of medium bright red rubies. Perfume of cherry blossoms, musk rose, plums, spicy cherry pie, some nutmeg, and toasty oak, with sort of a Russian River wildness to it. The smell of the river environment at dusk when it’s still, a kind of herbal vegetal greenness that is the Riparian zone. So much going on here—yum! The palate bursts forth with a richness of black cherries, cola, rhubarb, green ...

The Vineyard: This block is planted to 9 double rows of both Martini #58 and Pommard #5 clones. A total of 910 vines planted in 1972. 45 years old this vintage. One of the oldest plantings of Pinot Noir in the State of california. The soil profile is two feet of Goldridge loam on top of volcanic cinder cone material. Unique! Tasting Notes: Beautiful medium dark ruby in color. Deep, rich, complex perfume of spice and incense, smoke and licorice, peppermint and forest floor. Intriging to say the least. The palate is robust, black fruited, bramble berry, dark plum with a hint of tangerine rind followed ...

Racy and tart, bone dry, with mineral expressions. A pick-me-up for the palate. Great with oysters on the half shell.

A light to medium bright ruby color. Heavenly honeyed baked spice aromatics, toasty oak, with Manzanita flower, some citrus peel, and a grounded Douglas fir/pine forest floor perfume. Changes slowly to more red berries and perhaps lavender honey, subtle but intoxicating, mysterious, and sophisticated. Boasts forth on the palate with juicy red fruits, cardamom spice, blood orange, and earth. Not heavy, more ethereal. Mid palate entry has a delicate richness. Understated power which pleases the palate and a long silky finish—unlike anything else in our selection of wines. I could go on and on, but you be the ...
