Dutton-Goldfield Winery

Dutton-Goldfield Winery began in a vineyard in 1998, when longtime colleagues and friends Steve Dutton and Dan Goldfield recognized a shared vision between them--to craft wines that express the personalities of their vineyards, and which they'd enjoy drinking at their own dinner tables. Our mission is to produce world-class wines that display the brightness of fruit, complexity, structure and balance that are reflective of our cool coastal home.

New Wine Releases

2013 Dutton Ranch Shop Block Pinot Blanc Green Valley (Jul 16, 2014)
The cold valley of Purrington Creek always provides a Pinot Blanc of structure, bright acidity and minerality. In an extended, even season like 2013, the luscious peach and citrus fruit is also beautifully accentuated. In the nose, our Shop Block Pinot Blanc offers waves of intriguing springtime aromas, going from steely to floral to citrus. Pink grapefruit jumps out of the glass, underlain with dried mango and a sweet kiss of citrus blossoms. The first sip is incredibly refreshing, with white peach, nectarine, and lemon zest. The mouth is creamy and rich, yet so light on its feet, like gossamer silk, leaving you with a long, clean finish that lingers with a memory of key lime pie. This is the perfect front porch wine for easy sipping, and is also a fine match for fresh, light summer salads and seafood, or as a counterpoint to rich creamy dishes.

2012 Dutton Ranch Emerald Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir Green Valley (Jul 16, 2014)
This wine showcases what we love about Green Valley Pinot—just when you think you have its character pegged, it evolves as it opens in the glass. The initial focused blackberry fruit gives way to cherry, honeysuckle, and the mythical blueberry. One minute it’s the solid fruit and acidity that stand out, the next it’s the silky tannins and cinnamon/cardamom overtones. With a dry spring, moderate summer with no heat spikes, and even harvest weather, 2012 gave us beautifully ripened Green Valley fruit. The wine opens up with aromas of blackberry and blueberry, underlain with bass notes of strawberry rhubarb, and topped with highlights of violets and lavender. The sweet berry fruit at the core in the mouth is carried by silky and fine-grained tannins to the floral, candied finish. The depth and breadth of the wine is great, and would be an excellent match for meat with an herb rub, tuna steaks, or just some goat Gouda to match the creaminess of the wine. Be sure to stash some aside for a few years—the wound up concentration of this wine promises a luscious future.

2012 Angel Camp Vineyard Pinot Noir, Alexander Valley (Jul 16, 2014)
2012 was as friendly a growing season as it gets: the dry spring prompted early budbreak, May flowering weather was excellent, and a warm summer and fall with no heat spikes gave us fruit with beautiful ripeness—brown seeds, thick, dark skins, and great flavor. The result is a vintage of wonderful abundance and balance. This richness is apparent in the nose, which lures you in with aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, sweet plum, tobacco and sandalwood. The mouth is creamy and decadent, with the black cherry and plum fruit enveloped by toffee and Asian spice overtones. A chewy caress of tannins carries and accentuates the lengthy sweet boysenberry pie finish. The juxtaposition of dark and bright makes it a fascinating wine, and a great match for creamy goat cheese or dishes featuring dark fowl meat.

2012 Morelli Lane Zinfandel (Jul 1, 2014)
We’re thrilled to have our Morelli Zinfandel back as a single-vineyard offering for 2012, after a year hiatus. This winemaker adores the Morelli site, the bonsai-like shapes of the ancient vines, and crafting wine from their fruit. The 2012 vintage is a wonderful reflection of its place, with the aromas and flavors painting a picture of the berries, trees and flowers you pass on a walk down Morelli Lane. The friendly and opulent nose greets you with an immediate impression of brambly blackberry. As you swirl and contemplate this summer berry patch, the floral notes of rosehips come up, underlain with layers of redwood forest, clove and pepper. The mouth is sweet, rich and creamy, with the classic crème-de-cassis the wine is known for, dusky and spicy, but with a lift of bright strawberry. The extended finish is fresh and vibrant, encouraging the next sip. Few Zins are as versatile with food as this one. It’s perfect with summer grilling fare, and also a wonderful pairing for salty cheeses, or just a late night indulgence with special friends.

2013 Green Valley Vineyard Gewurztraminer (Jul 1, 2014)
In 2013 the dry, even year gave us early budbreak and a long ripening season to bring out the natural spice, floral notes and luscious citrus character of this exuberant varietal. In the nose, you’re immediately greeted with an intriguing combination of savory baking spices, lemon oil, orange blossoms and white peach. The first impression is one of brightness and succulent juiciness at the same time. In the mouth, the wine is rich and mouth coating, with pink grapefruit and tangerine sourball leading the way. The longer it sits in the glass, the more richness comes out. The finish is long and has a wonderful perception of sweetness (although the wine is bone dry, of course). We love pairing Gewürztraminer with Thai dishes!
