The Rhône Valley Region in southern France is home to many distinct varietals that you may also find along the Wine Road. Winemakers have embraced the popular Rhône grapes, which are well suited to the growing conditions in Northern Sonoma County. Rhône varietals and blends will vary in body from plush to lithe depending on the grape. Rhone’s are exceptionally food friendly, allowing for a wide range of food pairings. From light and easy drinking to lush and contemplative there’s a style for any occasion.
Red Rhône varietals you’ll find along the Wine Road include Syrah, Petite Sirah, Grenache, Carignane, Mourvedre, Cinsaut, and Counoise. Each variety offers a distinct set of characteristics. Red Rhône blends are typically deep garnet to deep purple in color with peppery aromatics and dark fruit flavors of blackberry and black raspberry, and firm tannins.
White Rhône varietals include: Viognier, Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, and Picpoul Blanc. White Rhone’s can range in style from lean and crisp, to opulent and creamy. A common, and utterly delicious, white Rhône blend is Marsanne and Roussanne, a must try.
Rhône style wines are an excellent place to expand your tasting experience—just beyond the horizon of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, there’s a wonderful world of Rhône varietals and Rhône style wines waiting to be discovered.
